If you are a home owner one of the most terrible things that can happen to you is water damage. The huge mess and inconvenience are one thing, but the high cost of repairs and maintenance can be a nightmare. In case you are in this kind of situation it may not be that hard to handle the problem if you are aware of what you can do.
1. Shutting off the main water line to the house is definitely the first thing to do. This will keep the water damage to a minimum. The cause for water damage is usually a backed up toilet or a broken water pipe. This can easily flood the hallway and get the carpets wet. Next thing to do is to evaluate the situation and determine if you can handle it yourself. If the water didn’t flood over the toilet and soak the carpets or wood floors, then chances are you may be able to handle it on your own. If that is not the case, however, and the carpets do get wet it is best to hire a water damage professional. Be sure to do so immediately to prevent further damage and repair costs.
2. If you have decided to take care of the problem yourself it will be a good idea to wear protective clothing. The sewage that comes from the backed up toilet can be harmful to you just by breathing it in or by coming into contact with it on your skin. The best things you can use as protective clothing is a pair of goggles, gloves and rubber boots.
3. Next move is to get rid of everything that has been soaked in the water. Even though there might be some things that you won’t want to get rid of, it’s better not to take the chance of contamination from the flood and illnesses due to bacteria in the flood water.
4. If the water floods a large area it is best to use a shop vacuum to suck up the standing water. If you don’t own one, try to borrow from someone or if you need to there are places where you may be able to rent one.
5. After cleaning the water it is time to sanitize the whole area. Bleach and water are good products for cleaning and sterilizing. If you mix the ingredients in the right quantity then it will do the trick. If you are using a market bought disinfectant then you should read the label on it before using it. Start with the floors and eventually moving on to the lower walls and everything that was touched by the contaminated water.
6. The final step to take after the sanitizing is done is to keeping the bathroom door open and use a fan so the bathroom can dry out quicker. It will be helpful to open the windows to air out the room and help the floors and floorboards dry quicker.
