India houses a variety of cultures and each one of these have been reflected in the world of Indian cinema. Though most states have their own regional film industries, Hindi movies incorporate a kaleidoscopic vision of all cultures as a whole. Bollywood has remained popular for its diversity, and the legacy continues even today. A parallel world is created in the films, which depict all kinds of emotion and this has taught people to appreciate and understand human relationships better.

The foundation of Hindi movies was laid by the Dadasaheb Phalke when he produced the first silent film- Raja Harishchandra way back in 1913. By the 1930s, Indian cinema had flourished and an average of 200 films was produced per year. For two decades after 1940, Bollywood saw the production of classics like “Kaagaz Ke Phool”, “Pyaasa” and “Mughal-e-Azam”. The world of Hindi movies gradually extended its limits and treaded new boundaries. Romance and action percolated through Bollywood flicks and became increasingly popular. The worldwide popularity of Bollywood was realized to its full extent with the onset of the new millennium. There were more art films and parallel cinema, and the popular entertainment flicks were increasing in number. Now, there are over 1000 releases per year.

The role of women in Indian cinema has remained ever changing. Sometimes the ‘weaker sex’ is depicted as meek and mild, whereas in other Indian movies she is the all encompassing power. A classic Indian movie like ‘Mother India’, which showcases the women at her powerful best, had remained unequalled for a very long time. In recent times, Bollywood actresses have become much more conscious about the films they take up. Women centric films like ‘Fashion’, ‘Dor’ and ‘No One Killed Jessica’ have carved a niche of their own. Actresses today go in for stronger and bolder roles and most often, these roles win critical acclaim.

The popularity of Hindi movies can be accredited to Bollywood stars to a great extent. In India, like elsewhere in the world, actors and actresses are highly revered. A good film might not draw crowds if the cast is not star studded. Among the most popular actors of Indian cinema, especially Bollywood, there is Amitabh Bacchan, Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Amir Khan, to name a few. Among highly acclaimed actresses there is Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, and Aishwarya Rai. The doors of Bollywood remain forever opened for fresh faces and new talents.

Most integral to Indian cinema are the song and dance sequences. The entertainment flicks incorporate these sequences inevitably. Hindi movies cannot do without Bollywood dance. The dance forms may be Indian or western. Only the recent art films do away with dance sequences. Even then, songs are inherent to almost every film. The most popular Bollywood films are melodramatic. However, there have been an increasing number of art films in recent times and these have also been well acclaimed.
