by Susan K. O'Keefe I never know what to expect when sitting down with an artist for an interview. Sure, they are always very pleasant, but then they know they have to be if they want good press, don't they? Talking with Jay Henley is like sitting on the front porch on a hot afternoon with a glass of sweet tea. He is tall, handsome, unassuming, and upbeat for someone who was up all night performing as he always does.
I began the conversation asking the most obvious thing I could think of - "How do you find time to write songs with your performance schedule? Jay laughingly admits that is problematic at times. Jay and his impossibly beautiful wife, Crystla, live with their new born child in Maryland. He definitely has a soft spot for her, and it is an endearing quality that seems to carry into his song choices and lyrics. Family seems to be an anchor in his life. His hero is his dad, who "really taught me a strong work ethic from when I was young." His musical leanings come from his mother, and he feels he is now getting to live out her dreams. His parents travel to his shows that are within a 300 mile radius, staying until 2 in the morning at times. They were the driving force in his decision to make a resolution to pursue a music career full time a reality. I asked if it was scary for him to make that leap "No," he quickly replies. "I had so much support from my family." He plays the guitar, and I would venture a guess that he was being self-deprecating in his assessment of his son outshining him. He plays acoustic guitar in his live performance, however, choosing to devote his complete attention to the fans. Jay digressed when asked which was more fulfilling - writing or performing. He talked about writing with obvious fond memories. But after seeing his live show, you can tell that his passion lives in performing for an audience. He has been playing venues up and down the east coast for years, but it is evident he has long surpassed the bar band stage in his career. Henley bounds onto the stage and from the first note of his silky voice you know you are in for a ride. His energy sweeps over the audience and, no matter how non-committal I tried to be, I was rocking with the music within a minute and a half. He can hip sway with the best, and takes in the ladies' screams with a hearty laugh, throwing t-shirts with his image out into the crowd with great delight. His band The Almighty Stone Broke Band moves with him effortlessly like a well oiled machine, transforming his performance into his own. The group harmonies are flawless. At this particular show they covered with an opening reminiscent of the vocal harmonies well blended together. Jay Henley takes on the task as he seemingly does everything else, in stride and at ease. He proved he has the chops to take on much more than party tunes with his fourth song, a ballad titled "IF THINGS GO WELL" that will be on his upcoming album. He doesn't just sing the notes; he wraps his voice around them. His goal, he states, is to bring out "a soulful sound of singing country." After hearing him, it becomes apparent this will be another goal he will easily attain.
As our interview wound down all I could think is "This guy really can't be for real, can he?" But real he is, and that is what sets him apart in the industry. No illusions - what you see is what you get, and with Jay Henley you are getting undeniable talent. While he wouldn't commit to being "obsessed" with checking his placement on the charts, he smiled wryly and admitted checking the charts on Thursdays just to see if his song has climbed any higher. I personally think it won't be much longer before he can check having a number one song off of his list of to dos. With his talent, it is pretty much a given.
